Clean Your Washer Like Pro

Welcome back to Busy Bee Blogs! We’re CLEANbee, and today, we wanted to continue in our “How to Clean” series. Today’s topic is how to clean your washing machine. Your washing machine works hard to keep your clothes fresh and clean, but it also needs regular maintenance to perform at its best. Over time, dirt, detergent residue, and mold can build up, leading to unpleasant odors and reduced efficiency. Here’s a step-by-step guide we put together on how to clean your washing machine like a pro.

1. Gather Your Cleaning Supplies: (Before you start, you’ll need the following)

  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • A microfiber cloth or sponge
  • An old toothbrush
  • Warm water

2. Clean the Drum: (For Front-Loading Machines)

  • Pour 2 cups of white vinegar directly into the detergent dispenser.
  • Run the machine on a hot water cycle with no clothes inside. The vinegar helps dissolve residue and eliminates odors.
  • After the cycle, sprinkle 1/2 cup of baking soda directly into the drum and run another hot water cycle. This step removes lingering odors and brightens the drum.

For Top-Loading Machines:

  • Fill the machine with hot water and add 4 cups of white vinegar.
  • Let the machine agitate for a minute, pause the cycle, and let the water sit for an hour. This allows the vinegar to break down the grime.
  • After an hour, restart the cycle and let it complete.
  • Once the cycle is finished, add 1 cup of baking soda and run another hot water cycle to freshen the drum.

3. Clean the Detergent Dispenser: Remove the detergent dispenser and soak it in warm, soapy water for about 15 minutes. Use an old toothbrush to scrub away any buildup or mold. Rinse thoroughly and let it dry before reinserting it into the machine.

4. Wipe Down the Door and Seal: The door and rubber seal (for front-loaders) are common areas for mold and mildew. Use a mixture of warm water and vinegar to wipe them down. Be sure to clean underneath and around the seal where grime often accumulates. Dry the area thoroughly with a clean cloth to prevent moisture buildup.

5. Inspect and Clean the Filter: Most washing machines have a filter that traps lint and debris. Check your user manual to locate it. Remove the filter, rinse it under running water, and clear away any trapped debris. Reinsert the filter once it’s clean.

6. Wipe the Exterior: Don’t forget the outside of your washing machine. Use a damp microfiber cloth and mild detergent to wipe down the exterior, removing dust and stains. Avoid using abrasive cleaners that could damage the finish.

7. Prevent Future Build-Up:

  • Leave the Door Open: After each use, open the door to allow the drum to dry and prevent mold growth.
  • Use the Right Detergent: Overusing detergent can lead to residue buildup. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for the correct amount.
  • Clean Regularly: Make it a habit to deep clean your washing machine every 1-3 months, depending on usage.

Final Thoughts: A clean washing machine ensures fresh-smelling laundry and extends the life of your appliance. Following these simple steps, you can keep your machine in top condition and enjoy spotless clothes every time you wash.
