In 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed a measure designed to help pay for civil war expenses. This allowed for a three percent tax on incomes from six hundred to ten thousand dollars, and a five percent tax on profits over ten thousand. Pretty fair we say, after all, soldiers had to fight the war, so the others could stay safe at home and produce for their families as well as the supplies necessary to wage war against the enemy.
Fast forward 158 years, the IRS is quite possibly one of the most hated organizations in the United States. They tax the individual who makes money that individual (our client) pays us, we charge them tax, on the money they already paid fees on, we pay our cleaners, we pay tax to pay them, they pay tax on their money. Then business pays tax on any profit (how is this benefit possible with a set up like this? I’m so confused.
One thing that we do know, tax returns make us all feel better about the messed-up situation that we call the IRS. A little money in our pocket gives us something to look forward to funding the projects that we’ve been waiting to do all year.
